TEXT EDIT
2011, single channel video, 4min 35sec

The artwork concerns one of the most powerful and primal forms of self-censorship, that is, one’s reactions to the fear that we do not know where and when our behaviors may be monitored. The video consists of nothing but a screen that shows an email in the process of being written. The content of the email is only to tell a friend good news that – even though this is never mentioned clearly – the writer is pregnant. Notwithstanding such a private and harmless content of the letter, the writer keeps erasing somewhat questionable expressions. The figure, who is typing the letter in Text Edit, seems quite apprehensive about the possibility that her email can be subjected to surveillance. For example, she at first jokes about how people terrorized her into carrying another child and then she deletes “terrorized” and revises it to “coaxed”. Revisions like this are repeated over and over again in the course of writing this short email. Through such a simple yet trenchant video, the artist strives to bring to the fore the absurdity of society, where people are forced to worry about falling under suspicion and being kept under constant watch.
