POST RESISTANCE
2013, photo series

The artist captures the remains of a demonstration during the Gezi Park protests, which took place in Istanbul in 2013. The protests were directed against an urban development plan for Istanbul, which included felling the trees in Gezi Park, and were fuelled by outrage at the violent eviction of demonstrators.  The uprising grew to include a broad range of concerns, such as freedom of the press, of expression, right of assembly, and the government’s role in Turkey’s secularization.

One of the side effects of the protests were slogans and signs on the walls of the surrounding buildings and in public spaces. Just like the demonstrators, the authorities wanted to be rid of these statements as quickly as possible. Instead of photographing the crowds of demonstrators, Boskurt documented the grey patches that were everywhere – the censored remains of attempts to voice an opinion.
